About Moxie

Our Research

Moxie for Kids brings research-informed social and emotional skill practice into everyday family life. Our approach centers on parents and children learning, playing, and reflecting together.

What are social and emotional skills?

Social and emotional skills help children recognize feelings, manage responses, understand other people, build relationships, and make thoughtful decisions. Families can explore these skills through conversations and shared activities.

Why bring skill practice home?

Home is one of the settings where children practice handling frustration, cooperating, and connecting with others. Moxie is designed to give parents and children practical ways to revisit emotional skills during the routines and interactions they already share.

How research informs the design

The original Moxie concept paper, by Dr. Stephanie Jones and the EASEL Lab at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, outlines a family-centered approach that combines skill introductions, games and practice, everyday routines, parent guidance, and reflection. These ideas inform how we are developing Moxie for use at home.

The research behind the approach

The broader SEL field includes research on emotional skills, relationships, and self-regulation. EASEL Lab resources offer background on these areas and on approaches to skill practice. This research informs the questions we ask as we develop and evaluate Moxie.

Has Moxie been proven to work?

Moxie is informed by SEL research. That foundation does not establish the effectiveness of the Moxie platform itself. Our pilots are intended to help us understand how families use the experience, what they find useful, and what should improve.

What we want to learn

We plan to examine whether families can get started easily, use the activities within everyday routines, and find the guidance useful. We also want to understand caregiver experiences and explore appropriate ways to assess skill practice over time.
